HILTON HEAD ISLAND — A bridge often serves as a symbol of connection. But plans for a new link between the island and the mainland have opened a chasm between some officials and residents. At issue is not whether something needs to change. Of the four bridges that span waterways between Hilton Head and the Bluffton area, one was constructed in 1956 and the other three were completed in 1982.The S.C. Carolina Department of Transportation has determined the oldest bridge needs to be replaced. The other three bridges are not built to modern standards, wrote Christy Hall, the state's secretary of transportation, in an email to The Post and Courier.
